Christianity

Around 30 A.D., a new religious movement began among the Jews in the distant border of the Roman Empire.  A group of Jews began following these teachings of a man known as Jesus Christ.  This movement began to expand beyond the Jews and that is how this new religion, called Christianity began.

Many people throughout the Mediterranean accepted Christianity and became known as Christians.  For the next 300 years, Christianity was practiced by many city dwellers privately.  Roman officials viewed Christians as threats and usually had them killed.

In 312 A.D., a well known Roman general named Constantine was changed to Christianity through spiritual experiences that he had during battle.  That same year, Constantine was made emperor of Rome.

Under his leadership he offered protection to all Christians that allowed churches to be built throughout the empire and the religion spread fast.

By 392 A.D., Christianity had become very powerful in Rome.  It was practiced from border to border.  In the same year, the emperor Theodosius declared Christianity the state religion and outlawed all other religious practices.
